Nia Imani Family, Inc., is Milwaukee’s only long-term transitional living facility, where women and their children can stay for up to two years. Nia Imani serves primarily homeless, low-income, African American women, many of whom have experienced interpersonal violence, childhood sexual abuse and domestic violence, have used or abused drugs, and are working to retain or regain custody of their children. While at Nia Imani, programming is provided to women and their children to help women get sober, learn needed life skills, and become independent.
Milwaukee’s homelessness problem is significant and growing. In recent years, Nia Imani Family calls for housing have increased 50%compared to past years.
Nia Imani Family continually accepts in-kind donations in order to support the women and their children in its care. When women and children arrive at their transitional housing residence, it’s sometimes with only the clothes on their backs. They need household items, including furniture, appliances, kitchen items, and bedding, plus clothing, personal care items, toys and books. The program collects these items yearlong.
